Let’s be real, working out is sweaty business. A good workout will leave you sweating. Whether you’re hitting the treadmill, crushing a spin class, or lifting heavy, breaking a sweat is a sign you’re putting in the work. But that effort can sometimes come with a not-so-pleasant side effect: body odour and it is especially very unpleasant for the people that have to endure it. The good news? There are smart, simple ways to stay fresh even during your most intense workouts. Here’s how to combat body odour while exercising with other people

1. Start Fresh:
We understand it’s almost impossible to not sweat after working out and it’s very important to wash up after working out, but it’s smart and sensible to ensure you start fresh. If you wake up after a long night’s sleep and you notice you’re already smelling of sweat, you should have a quick rinse before heading out. Showering beforehand helps remove existing bacteria and sets the stage for a less stinky session.

Pro tip: Use an antibacterial soap or body wash to minimize odor-causing bacteria.

2. Choose the Right Deodorant (or Antiperspirant)

Deodorants help to eliminate odour and leave you smelling better, while antiperspirants reduce how much you sweat. Since odour is your main issue in this case, stick with deodorant. If you care about how much you sweat as well as the odour, go for a combo product.

3. Wear Clean, Breathable Workout Clothes

Workout gear matters more than you might think. Synthetic fabrics like polyester can trap odours, especially if you wear them more than once. Always start with clean clothes and consider investing in odour-resistant athletic wear.

4. Towel Off Often

Keep a clean towel on hand to wipe off sweat as you exercise. This helps prevent sweat from sitting on your skin too long and feeding bacteria.

Bonus tip: Use body wipes and body spray for a mid-workout refresh if needed.

5. Hydrate and Eat Clean

What you put in your body can affect how it smells. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins and keeps your sweat less concentrated. Certain foods like garlic, onions, and spicy dishes can lead to stronger body odor.
Go for foods that have a lot of fluid content and water

6. Keep Gym Gear Fresh

It’s easy to forget, but your exercise bag, shoes, and even your water bottle can harbor odors. Wash your gear regularly and let your shoes air out between workouts.
Don’t rewear your sweaty clothes, ensure to wash your clothes and towels after each session

7. Time Your Workouts Wisely

Aim to work out during times when you can shower right afterward. Also, choose times where the weather isn’t too hot (early mornings and evenings). Plan your baths before your morning or evening workouts

8. Consider Body Hair Grooming

While this is a personal choice, trimming or managing body hair (especially underarms) can help reduce the amount of bacteria that clings to sweat, which can in turn reduce body odour

Finally, remember body odour is natural as that is why we plan daily baths. Exercising regularly means you get to sweat even more (which has a lot of benefits) and with the right hygiene routine, you can keep it in check while still going all out at your fitness goals. Focus on cleanliness, breathable gear, hydration, and smart products’ choices, and you’ll stay confident and fresh through every set and rep.

Remember, smelling good is good manners.
